The Complete DermiMatch Kit Guide that comes with the kit has been updated to version 8.2.

This includes a color chart that will help take the guess work out of which pigment color and needle size to use per client.  We have also added a diagram of the machine and pen to indicate how one would keep it sterile and which part to autoclave.  Please download the latest guide to see the additions.

Here is the DermiMatch Color Chart. with some common questions:

Why is the same pigment used for different hair colors? When hair is grown out (long), you can see the various subtle colors of the hair shafts.  There are hundreds of different distinct hair colors. However, when hair is shaved down short, this variety of hair color does not exist.  Light is no longer shining through the hair, giving it its distinct color properties. At these short lengths, the noticeable color change in hair is very slight.  With the client’s skin color playing a much greater role in determining which pigment to use at this hair length, only the 3 color distinctions are necessary. Same can be said when you are filling in a client’s thinning hair.  When filling in thinning hair, you are simply creating a shadow cast of the hair; not their exact hair color. Example, if a blonde person has thinning hair, adding a light yellow/blonde color to their scalp with do nothing for them, except cause a lot of pain and wasted time.  The whole point, with thinning hair, is to hide the scalp by making it darker.

How do I know which needle size to use?  You’ll notice, on each needle size recommendation in the color chart, you are given 2 different options regarding what size to use.  As you become more familiar with how each needle size looks in the skin, it is best to start on the safe side, and always go with the smaller of the recommended needle sizes. As you gain more experience, regarding client’s age/skin tone/ hair thickness, you will be able to more easily determine when to use which size.

How do I properly work on gray hair? When someone has gone completely gray/white, and they are bald, they must shave their hair all the way down.  At this time, you would need to cover their entire head (around the ears and down the back of their head). Create a lighter density by spacing the follicle points out to create a graying (salt and pepper) look.

Does the DermiMatch Color Chart apply to scars as well? Yes, but most scars will require an SMP2 or SMP3 needle as scar skin is thicker and pushes pigment out easily.

Does the DermiMatch Color Chart apply to fill-ins on thinning hair?  Yes, the color chart applies to thinning hair as well.  Please see the answer under “Why is the same pigment used for different hair colors?” section above.
