Scalp Micropigmentation Healing Process

Posted by Mary Shoufield on

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure gaining popularity for its ability to create the illusion of thicker hair or a fuller scalp. Tiny needles deposit pigment into the scalp, mimicking hair follicles and offering a realistic solution for those experiencing hair loss.

While the procedure itself is minimally invasive, proper aftercare is crucial for optimal healing and long-lasting results.  So, what can you expect during the scalp micropigmentation healing process?

The Immediate Aftermath

Following your SMP session, you can expect some redness, swelling, and tenderness around the treated area. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about. The effects will typically subside within a few days. However, here are a few SMP aftercare tips to follow for a smooth healing.

Keep the area clean and dry

Avoid showering or washing your scalp for at least 24-48 hours, depending on the artist's instructions. After that, gentle cleansing with a lukewarm shower and a mild, fragrance-free shampoo is recommended.

Avoid strenuous activity

Sweating can irritate the scalp and potentially affect pigment retention, so avoid strenuous exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating for the first few days.

Don't scratch the skin

It is normal for the treated area to feel itchy as it heals, but that does not mean you should pick or scratch at the scabs. Picking can dislodge the pigment and compromise the results.

Sun protection

Avoid direct sunlight for at least a week, as UV rays can cause fading and disrupt healing. Wear a hat or use sunscreen if sun exposure is unavoidable.

The Healing Journey

Over the next 7-14 days, you'll likely experience some scabbing. This is a natural part of the healing process as your body forms a protective layer over the treated area. Here's what to keep in mind:

Let the scabs fall off naturally

Picking or scratching at scabs can not only disrupt healing but also lead to scarring and pigment loss. Be patient and allow them to detach on their own.

Moisturize

Once the scabs start to fall off, your artist might recommend applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to the treated area to prevent dryness and itching.

After approximately 10-14 days, the scabs should have completely fallen off, and the initial redness should have faded significantly. However, this isn't the final result just yet. The pigment needs time to settle into the scalp, and the full effect of the SMP will gradually emerge over the next 4-6 weeks.

During this time, you can resume most of your normal activities, including showering, exercise, and swimming (consult your artist for specific timelines on swimming).

Long-Term Care

Once you've completed your SMP sessions and the healing process is finished, maintaining your results is relatively simple. Here are some key points to remember:

Sun protection

Continued sun protection is essential to prevent fading of the pigment. Wear hats or use sunscreen on your scalp when outdoors.

Scalp care

Maintain a healthy scalp routine with gentle cleansing and occasional exfoliation. You will need a chemical-free cleansing solution that is gentle on your scalp and helps with healing.

Remember, a successful scalp micropigmentation experience goes beyond the procedure itself. Following a proper aftercare routine is essential to ensure optimal healing and achieve the best possible long-term results.
