What is the Recovery Time After SMP?

Posted by Mary Shoufield on

Scalp micropigmentation involves making small incisions into the skin. The goal of the treatment is to create an illusion of hair follicles and make the scalp look like a full head of hair. However, since the perforations are small and made using microneedles, they are harmless and painless. This makes the process of SMP recovery speedy. The body tries to correct the damage caused by these small ruptures. The immune system becomes active and starts the healing process.

Precautions

When perforation is made in the dermis, there is little bleeding and the body’s inflammatory response begins in the form of blood clotting. As a result, a scab is formed at the site to prevent infection. When new cells are formed, the wound is automatically closed off by contraction.

After the first session, SMP results in redness, which is a natural response of the body. There may be some inflammation but it is natural and nothing to worry about. In fact, it is the first step toward wound healing.

Scabs are formed on the second day after the treatment session. The skin continues to heal under the scabs. It is essential to avoid wearing any head scarves, hats, or covers for a long time to let the skin breathe.

By the 5th or 6th day, the scabs usually dry out and start to fall off. It is a cardinal sin to pick at the scabs. Avoid doing that even if there is a strong urge to do so. You don’t want to do anything that disturbs scabs. Let them fall off after the site has healed completely. Now you are ready for the next SMP session.

How Long Does It Take for SMP To Fully Heal?

Healing helps enclose the pigments. At this time, some areas may appear darker than others. Do not be surprised to see lighter pigment underneath scabs. The reason is that scabs take a small amount of pigment with them. That means the new skin is light.

Now the SMP practitioner has a good idea about your skin sensitivity and behavior to the pigment. They can plan better for the next session to create the best experience for clients.

By Day 14th, you can book the next session as the scabs should have healed by now.

30 Days After the Final Session

After each SMP session, the scalp goes through the 10-day healing process. Once the period ends, you can return to your normal routine while following SMP aftercare tips. Of course, you must avoid hitting the gym or pool to reduce the risk of infection from chlorinated water and prevent excessive sweating.

Avoid harsh products during the healing stage. It is advised not to use chemical shampoo that uses sulfates or paraben, which may cause allergic reactions or irritation. Remember, aftercare is essential since your scalp is sensitive. Chemicals can affect the pigments.
